The need-to-know music festivals in Hamburg this summer: MS Dockville and Reeperbahn Festival

MS Dockville Festival: 18 – 20 August

Now in its 11th year, music and visual arts festival MS Dockville is a go-to for the alternative music scene. Revellers can look forward to a diverse line-up of headline names supported by an array of emerging musicians, set against the backdrop of Hamburg’s industrial docklands.

This year UK acts Glass Animals, Oh Wonder, King Krule and Alex Vargas, amongst others, will join an eclectic line-up at this festival

With the likes of Bastille, Foals and Four Tet having made a name for themselves at MS Dockville in previous years, the line-up for 2017 promises to display an array of emerging talent from across the world.

To enhance the festival experience, there will be an app including an interactive map and search functions available through the App Store and Google Play Store.

Reeperbahn Festival: 20 – 23 September 2017

Since its debut in 2006, Reeperbahn Festival has become known as a hotspot for music industry insiders. The festival takes place along the Reeperbahn, in Hamburg’s legendary St Pauli district, with over 500 concerts scheduled to take place across 70 locations in St Pauli.

International and adventurous, Reeperbahn Festival focuses on newcomer bands and has seen the likes of Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard, and Bon Iver perform as newcomers at its intimate venues before going on to international stardom. A live performance by UK singer-songwriter Rag’n’Bone Man at Reeperbhan Festival in 2016 marked the start of his meteoric ascent, cementing the festival’s track record of spotting and nurturing up-and-coming talent.

This year, the diverse line-up includes UK acts Maximo Park, Everything Everything, Newton Faulkner and Betsy amongst others. Besides the world-class music, Art and photography exhibitions, a film and literature programme and an exciting array of workshops will also draw in visitors to the Reeperbahn in September.

New for 2017, BBC Music Introducing will present four new UK artists at Reeperbahn Festival. This platform for fresh and exciting new music from the UK will bring four unsigned artists to the festival: IDER, Jordan Max, Matt Maltese and Nilüfer Yanya.

More than 35,000 people will congregate along the Reeperbahn during the four days of the festival – among them musicians seeking to inspire the crowds, label bosses scouting for new talents, young start-ups with innovative ideas and countless eager festival fans.

Hamburg on Tour: bringing the festivals to London

For those who cannot travel to Hamburg this summer, the city’s music scene will come to London in the Autumn. Hamburg on Tour is a one of a kind pop up event coming to London’s Brick Lane on 20 – 21 October 2017, designed to showcase the city’s music and festival region. A host of artists from both MS Dockville and Reeperbahn will join the party, bringing Londoners a taste of the festivals with live music and craft beer at this free pop up in the heart of Shoreditch.
