Vienna ahoy! Hamburg spectacularly drops its anchor in the River Danube

From the Elbe to the Danube: “Vienna ahoy! Hamburg is coming.” This is the title of a spectacular project during which Hamburg will present itself in the old town of Vienna, Austria, between 1 and 3 August 2014. The project begins with the launching of an oversized paper ship that has a length of 14 metres and a height of 5 metres. On 1 August, the ship will be moored at the beach club Strandbar Herrmann on the Danube Canal. On board this giant paper ship: three smaller paper ships as high as a man. Each one of these three “daughter ships” is a unique piece of work imprinted with Hamburg motives, to be further complemented by interactive activities inviting the public to join in. At night, the “mother ship” will be transformed into a huge projection surface featuring footage from Hamburg. One of the highlights of the project will be the live coverage of the Hamburg Cruise Days Parade on 2 August.

Experience Hamburg’s maritime flair – in Vienna

Hamburg will be presenting itself at the Strandbar Herrmann on the Danube Canal, on the Rathausplatz, in front of the Vienna State Opera and in the Museumsquartier: entirely free of charge, visitors can experience the vibrant, cultural waterside metropolis of Hamburg through an exciting and surprising high-quality programme. Highlights include e.g. performances from the ELBJAZZ Festival, as well as performances by Hamburg artist group A Wall is a Screen, who will host guided city tours at night, using mobile cinema technology to present short films on unusual “screens” such as house walls and the undersides of bridges.

Moreover, an authentic guided tour through the Reeperbahn entertainment mile will be conducted through the streets of Vienna – with an original St Pauli guide, taking the Viennese audience on an imaginary Reeperbahn tour in the Museumsquartier. As part of the Vienna Film Festival, which is held in parallel, the Hamburg State Opera will be performing their own production of Madama Butterfly. Dr Kerstin Schüssler-Bach, head dramaturge at the Hamburg State Opera, will be giving an exclusive introductory talk on this occasion. What is more, the Filmcasino in Vienna will be showing the documentary Die Wilde 13 as part of a collaboration with Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein. A subsequent panel discussion with the film’s director, producer and a Viennese urban researcher will complement the screening.

Be a captain for a day

On 3 August, the final day, the residents of Vienna are invited to the Museumsquartier to fold their own paper ships and sign them with greetings to Hamburg and to float them in a large pool of water. There will be a raffle in which all participating “paper ship captains” have the chance to win a trip to Hamburg. PM 29/07/2014 2 of 2 Hamburg Convention Bureau GmbH

Launch of a new format: Hamburg on tour

“Together with leading cultural institutions and business partners in Hamburg we are making the Hamburg brand a liveable experience right in the middle of Vienna. Our aim is to bring a positive Hamburg feeling directly to the people,” says Thorsten Kausch, Managing Director of the Hamburg Convention Bureau and Hamburg Marketing GmbH.

The project in Vienna is the prelude to further live communication events subsumed under the title “Hamburg on tour” – an event format that aims to present the Northern German metropolis of Hamburg to international audiences over the coming years.
