Future Hamburg Award seeking startups for the city of the future
All successful metropolises face similar challenges: Increased traffic, more emissions and limited space – challenges that can only be mastered with innovative ideas. The Future Hamburg Award is looking for startups with the right solutions. The innovation award is for any new company whose goal is bringing sustainable change to urban life through mobility, logistics or green hydrogen.
Startups founded within the last five years and that have a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) – one functional product – are eligible. The award was created by Hamburg Marketing together with Hamburg's startup unit and has now found strong partners in the California based innovation platform Plug and Play, venture capitalist Am Hafen Capital and the homePORT development campus. With the startup award the City of Hamburg honours innovative solutions for the city of tomorrow. The Future Hamburg Award is also an international bridgehead between Europe and the US: The winner can develop its sustainable innovation in Silicon Valley and has also the chance to put it to use in the real-world laboratory of Hamburg.
Between the hydrogen coast and Silicon Valley
The winning team will travel to Silicon Valley for a month to take part in one of Plug and Play’s accelerator programs. The program brings partners of the innovation platform together and advises on the further development of products and business ideas. Plug and Play has a broad network of business partners and venture capitalists, and supports about 200 startups each year in Germany alone. And that regularly includes smart city startups – digital innovations for the sustainable city of the future. “Hamburg can show the world how a smart city would look like, because business and society work closely together. I am delighted to support the Future Hamburg Award with our international network,” says Plug and Play founder and CEO Saeed Amidi.
Awarded startups will also benefit from all the advantages of Hamburg as a key European economic metropolis: “With the Future Hamburg Award, we want to contribute to the sustainable innovative power of cities. The world's best startups will have the opportunity to test their business models in a real-world lab in one of Europe's most innovative metropolises,” says Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, CEO of Hamburg Invest.
Setting off into the innovation year of 2021
Applications will be accepted through March 31, 2021. The jury will then shortlist 10 startups. Successful applicants will be notified in April. Once the jury has met, the winning team will be announced in summer.
The first award in 2019 attracted 120 teams from 26 countries. The winners included Hamburg startup Lignopure, which evolved from the Technical University of Hamburg and developed an environmentally friendly production method for biologic plastics.
