Welcome to a new acoustic dimension

The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is dedicated to offering variety, quality and accessibility with its music programme. In addition to three local orchestras – primarily the orchestra in residence, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra – and the Ensemble Resonanz, which also holds a residency, a host of the international classical music scene’s first-rate performers and no fewer than 15 top orchestras from around the world will grace the stage in Hamburg during the opening season. Concerts in other genres – jazz, pop, folk, singer-songwriter, world music, among others – round off the programme. »We share Leonard Bernstein’s philosophy,« says General and Artistic Director Christoph Lieben-Seutter. »There’s just good music and bad music. At the Elbphilharmonie, you’ll only hear good music.«

Variety is the name of the game

The opening concerts on 11 and 12 January 2017 will be followed by a three-week-long festival featuring ensembles including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin-based band Einstürzende Neubauten. All in all, the concert hall will host more than 300 events in the first half of 2017. The range of events at the Elbphilharmonie is designed to make it a concert hall for everyone. Both aficionados and newcomers to music can experience a diverse programme packed with highlights which will establish an inspiring relationship between the concert hall and the audience.

In addition to the plethora of artists listed in the programme for the 2016/17 season, three additional concerts have now been confirmed. On 8 May, the Kings of Convenience from Norway will give one of their rare guest performances, and the breathtaking mandolin player Chris Thile will present a solo evening spanning everything from Bach to improvisation on 26 March. World-class cellist Yo-Yo Ma will join pianist Kathryn Stott on 24 January for an evening of sonatas including works by Bach, Shostakovich, Franck and Debussy. One concert has also been rescheduled: the evening of lieder with Jonas Kaufmann and Helmut Deutsch will now be held on Wednesday 24 May 2017 at 20:00 instead of 22 February 2017 for scheduling reasons.

About Elbphilharmonie Hamburg:

With the opening of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on 11 and 12 January 2017, Hamburg forges its path as a city of music, once again demonstrating that the city is shaping its future based on contrast. Located in the HafenCity Hamburg district – Europe's largest inner-city development project between the Speicherstadt UNESCO World Heritage site and the port – this unique concert hall is emerging as a new magnet for locals and guests alike. The spectacular building comprises three concert halls with a diverse music programme, a comprehensive music education programme, a hotel, as well as the Plaza – a public viewing platform at a height of 37 metres that offers visitors an amazing view of the city and will open already on 4 November 2017.

Designed by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the dazzling glass structure of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg rises up to a height of 110 metres upon the former Kaispeicher A, a historic warehouse that was subsequently used for storing tea, tobacco and coffee. With its unique architecture the new concert hall represents the diverse, maritime flair of Hamburg – a city that is built on tradition and modernity and continues to successfully reshape its future by drawing on courage, creativity, innovation and cosmopolitanism. The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg symbolises the city’s ruggedness and beauty, these ubiquitous contrasts that are so characteristic for Hamburg’s appeal as the gateway to the world.
