ELBJAZZ and Theater der Welt: Two festivals inviting you to the port of Hamburg
At this year’s Whit weekend, Hamburg’s port will be setting the scene for two very special cultural highlights: during the ELBJAZZ Festival (2 to 3 June), the port will once again provide the backdrop for a one-of-a-kind music event that allows visitors to enjoy two full days of live performances in maritime locations – with renowned artists such as Gregory Porter and the Joshua Redman Trio. Around the same time and starting on 25 May, the international theatre festival “Theater der Welt” will be presenting a broad range of productions from around the world in the heart of Hamburg’s port. In short: the perfect opportunity for music and theatre lovers to spend the long bank holiday weekend in Hamburg.
Since the ELBJAZZ Festival’s launch in 2010, thousands of visitors have been celebrating at one of Europe’s largest jazz festivals that combines Hamburg’s unique maritime flair with spectacular venues and musical diversity. Following a short break last year, the 2017 ELBJAZZ Festival will be featuring artists such as Gregory Porter & Band, Nils Wülker, the Joshua Redman Trio, and Agnes Obel. Taking place on 2 and 3 June, some 50 concerts will be performed on eight different stages across the port: in and in front of the new Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, in the church of St. Katharinen, in the Thalia Theater tent at Baakenhöft as well as on four stages at the Blohm+Voss shipyard. Visitors will be able to commute between the Elbphilharmonie and the Blohm+Voss shipyard by barge, or walk to the shipyard from the Landungsbrücken in just a few minutes through the Old Elbe Tunnel. Further information, tickets and the complete line-up for the festival are available at www.elbjazz.de/.
And yet not only jazz fans, but also theatre lovers will be getting their money’s worth at this bank holiday weekend, with various international theatre shows taking place in Hamburg: from 25 May to 11 June, the “Theater der Welt” festival will be featuring 45 productions from all five continents across all genres – including drama, performance, dance theatre and music theatre as well as staged concerts, installations and events in the public sphere. Acting as the guiding theme for this year’s festival, the port is not only reflected in the productions and the festival programme, but also serves as the venue for selected shows in collaboration with the ELBJAZZ Festival. The Whit weekend programme as well as the full programme of events are available at www.theaterderwelt.de/.
