Hamburg Among the Ten Most Liveable Cities Worldwide
Hamburg is the only German city among the ten most liveable cities worldwide, a scientific analysis made by the Magazine “The Economist” says. The city is particularly good in categories like healthcare, culture and environment, infrastructure and stability. Melbourne, Vienna and Vancouver are leading the ranking. With Helsinki there is only one more European metropolis in the top ten.
Hamburg is among the ten most liveable cities worldwide, according to a ranking by the “Economist Intelligence Unit”. Melbourne in Australia again leads the ranking. Vienna in Austria and Vancouver in Canada take second and third place this year. In corporation with “The Economist” scientists, once a year, take a closer look at lifestyle challenges in larger cities worldwide. The Hanseatic city was able to improve its standing among the 140 cities surveyed.
The researchers defined thirty factors across healthcare, culture, environment, education, stability and infrastructure. Living costs were excluded from the ranking, while the rising fear of terrorism attacks was added.
This so-called “Stability” factor was one reason why Hamburg was able to improve its standing in the ranking. Sydney, for example, has fallen due to a heightened perceived threat of terrorism, the authors wrote. A similar perception would have also lead to a decline in the positions of Frankfurt and Berlin.
Where Hamburg is strong: infrastructure and healthcare
Hamburg overall rates 95 out of 100 points in the ranking of liveability. In comparison: Melbourne earned its first place with 97.5 points.
Hamburg reached perfect results in the categories “Infrastructure” and “Healthcare” (100 points). Furthermore, the city excelled in “Culture and Environment” as well as “Education” (93,5 vice versa 91,7 points). In terms of “Stability” most of the citizens seemed to feel relatively safe from terrorism and crime, Hamburg reached 90 points in this category.
Hamburg Increasingly Popular Among Tourists
City port, Alster and Elbe, shopping and sightseeing: More and more tourists are coming to visit Hamburg. In the first six months this year the overnight stays in the Hanseatic city increased by 6 percent compared to the same period last year. The authorities counted a total of more than 6 million overnight stays of German and foreign guests (Source: Statistikamt Nord). New flights and additional cruises further stimulated this development (more: www.hamburg-travel.com).
Working and Living in Hamburg
The Hanseatic city scores being a particularly green city, the ideal place of residence with a liveability. These so-called soft location factors are becoming increasingly important for the economic world. They help to recruit and keep well-trained staff and professionals. An innovative start-up scene supported by a well-developed infrastructure, including co-working spaces, founder initiatives and investment options, ensures creativity and innovation potential. To this adds a vibrant cultural community – museums, theatres, restaurants, bars and pubs. International events and, especially, the opening ceremony of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg 11th and 12th of January 2017 make the Hanseatic city a magnet for the international community.
