Leading wind industry fair WindEnergy opens on Monday in Hamburg / Germany

Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and Vice-Chancellor of Germany is to open WindEnergy Hamburg on Monday evening, 22 September. The leading wind industry fair will be held in Hamburg for the first time from 23 to 26 September. More than 1,200 exhibitors from all parts of the world are expected at this premiere event, presenting their products on about 65,000 square metres of exhibition space. A 64.4 metre rotor blade was set up in front of the exhibition site yesterday – signalling this huge industry event in Hamburg, the global capital of the wind industry. This large-scale exhibit from turbine manufacturer Nordex SE is a global innovation.

On the evening before the leading global wind expo, Economics and Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel will address 600 prominent international guests at the Opening Ceremony in Hamburg City Hall, highlighting the significance of the wind industry. For four days starting on Tuesday, the Hamburg Fair site will be the meeting point for energy experts from all over the world. WindEnergy Hamburg is the ideal platform for the global industry to engage in dialogue and present its new products, innovative technologies and essential services. WindEnergy Hamburg covers the whole of the value chain, both onshore and offshore. Its exhibitors include companies from more than 30 countries, and there will be 18 national pavilions where wind industry companies and organisations get together to provide information on their products and services. WindEnergy gives trade visitors a whole host of information and networking opportunities. There will be presentations, workshops and panel discussions on the subjects of vital interest to the industry.

World premiere at the Hamburg Fair site Outstanding mega-exhibits like the 64.4 metre rotor blade on public display for the duration of the fair give a feel for the importance of wind energy. This impressive blade from an N131/3000 onshore turbine was transported to Hamburg and through its streets during the night, and installed on a special adaptor. This adaptor is designed to raise the gigantic rotor blade to an inclination angle of up to 70°, for better manoeuvring when passing through urban areas or difficult terrain. The turbine from the Hamburg based manufacturer Nordex SE is designed for low-wind locations. Its nominal output of 3.0 MW is 25% more than the previous model. It is one of the three blades which are assembled to form a rotor with a total diameter of 131 metres. The swept area of the rotor is as large as two world-class football pitches.

German Renewables Award 2014

Power from sea waves, a decentralised energy supply for cities, a cost reduction model for offshore projects - the 61 applications for the German Renewables Award 2014 impress with their variety of topics and their high level of innovation. For the first time, the Renewable Energy Hamburg Cluster is not only awarding the prize in the “Product Innovation of the Year” and “Project of the Year” categories, but also for “Student Thesis, Wind” and “Lifetime Achievement, Wind”. The awards ceremony will be held during the international WindEnergy Hamburg 2014 trade fair on Tuesday 23 September 2014.

Hamburg – the world´s wind energy capital

For many of the industry’s global players, WindEnergy Hamburg will be a home game as leading companies from the entire value creation chain such as DONG Energy, Nordex, Senvion and Siemens have established their headquarters in Hamburg. At the same time, the hinterland with its numerous production sites perfectly complements Hamburg as an international development, sales and service centre. Among industry insiders, Hamburg is now considered as the worldwide wind energy capital – and thus the perfect setting for bringing together specialists from around the world and serving as a meeting point for the energy industry. Around 25,000 people are working in 1,466 regenerative energy companies in the region between Cuxhaven and Lübeck, and Neumünster and Lüneburg. From 2008 to 2012 the number of jobs in the renewable industry rose by 56 per cent. The most important contribution to this development within the Hamburg metropolitan region has been made by wind energy. The Hamburg Metropolitan Region, with Europe’s second largest container port in Hamburg and a strong maritime economy, offers an excellent setting, especially for the offshore sector. The trade fair will exhibit solutions for the offshore wind industry from a broad range of globally active plant manufacturers, suppliers, planners and project managers. This will include numerous exhibitors from the ship building industry who shortly prior to WindEnergy will have exhibited at the SMM Hamburg, the leading international maritime industry trade fair. Experts from both branches will have the opportunity to exchange their offshore experiences and make contacts in new business fields. Thus the leading international trade fair for wind energy is also the largest trade fair for the offshore wind industry.
