“Little Italy” in Hamburg: Miniatur Wunderland presents Italy in miniature
Today, following four years of construction and more than 180,000 hours of work, Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland presented its most recent masterpiece: a miniature replica of Italy on a 190 square-metre area. Rome with St Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum, Cinque Terre, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast are but a few highlights that have been elaborately recreated in this new themed world of Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest model railway. Hamburg Tourismus GmbH is offering admission tickets and affordable accommodation opportunities to all those who would like to experience Italy and many other countries in miniature.
Miniatur Wunderland is the largest model railway in the world and Hamburg's number one tourist attraction. To date, more than 15 million visitors from across the globe have viewed the eight themed worlds that include e.g. Austria, the Nordic countries and the American continent. 15 kilometres of railway tracks, 15,000 locomotives and wagons, as well as 215,000 figurines and over 4,000 buildings make whole countries come to life in miniature. Following four years of construction, the Italy section adds a ninth world on 190 square metres. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the (miniature) world of Italy and admire Rome and St Peter's Basilica, visit the Colosseum, explore the lost city of Pompeii, soak up the sun on the beaches of the Amalfi Coast, enjoy the wine of Tuscany and hike in the mountains of South Tyrol – and do all this without leaving Hamburg.
More than 180,000 hours of work have gone into this new section, the most detailed project of Miniatur Wunderland yet. Each building, whether an eminent landmark or a small village chapel, has been intricately modelled on the original and painstakingly recreated by hand. On literally every square metre of the exhibition you will be able to admire miniature masterpieces.
