Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg – talents, trends & trade
Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg – talents, trends & trade
Talents – featuring tomorrow’s music acts
In terms of music, the Reeperbahn Festival largely focusses on international newcomers who often present themselves for the first time in front of a German audience and the European music scene. This year’s festival will be featuring e.g. Rhonda from Hamburg, who has become known as “the German Amy Winehouse”. Her smoky retro soul is reminiscent of the beat music of the 1950s and 60s and is definitely worth experiencing. Blonde Redhead from New York have been performing outside the mainstream for 20 years and also rank among the festival’s special gems. The fact that the Reeperbahn Festival stages this band certainly pays witness to the festival’s unparalleled diversity. After all, the band’s mystical, melancholy sound is in stark contrast to e.g. the neo-rave beats of Boys Noize, who will also be performing at this year’s festival. Born and bred in Hamburg, Boys Noize now resides in Berlin. Over the past seven years, he has been moving people on dance floors and festival stages from Los Angeles to Ibiza. With his remixes for Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Bloc Party, Depeche Mode and Rammstein, Boys Noize produces danceable electro sound, while also continuously increasing his fan base. Numerous other bands from various genres will be playing at this year’s festival at more than 70 unique venues big and small – among them basement pubs, concert halls, night clubs, bars, theatres, churches, barges, museums and table dance clubs. An estimated 35,000 festival guests will be able to enjoy more than 400 gigs, ranging from punk and hip-hop to indie and singer/songwriter performances – offering something for every taste. UK @ Reeperbahn Festival
Since years the Reeperbahn Festival offers the perfect opportunity for young British bands to showcase themselves the first time on the European continent. This year Ella Eyre (probably the “the” British voice of the moment), East India Youth (with recently fantastic press in the UK and the charismatic William Doyle in front), Ebsen and The Witch, Kill it Kid, Dark Horses and Common Tongues will represent among others the best of British Music on the Reeperbahn.
Trends – creativity made in St Pauli
The music programme will be complemented by 70 additional programme items, with art, street art and literature performances in unique venues in and around St Pauli. One of the highlights includes the Türsteherlesung (“A Doorman’s Reading”). This German-language piece features bizarre dialogue, quirky sketches and weird people from the work routine of fictitious bouncers Viktor, Mark and Henning and provides humorous insights into Hamburg’s nightlife scene. The Street Art Walk invites you to explore the creative side of St Pauli, Hamburg’s former red-light district. Two experts from the St Pauli scene will take you on an urban discovery tour and provide you with insights into St Pauli street art, ranging from art projects in empty flats to hidden backyard galleries. The Flatstock Europe Poster Convention is yet another highlight and has now turned into an indispensable part of the Reeperbahn Festival. 30 poster artists from Europe and overseas will be presenting their work. All posters on sale are unique pieces from limited editions. Music also plays an integral part in this festival component: on the occasion of the first Reeperbahn Festival eight years ago, international artists first travelled to Hamburg to display and sell their gig posters on Spielbudenplatz in St Pauli.
Trade – the music industry gathers in Hamburg
The Reeperbahn Festival conference is one of the most important industry events for Europe’s music and digital creative industries and has become even more important in 2014: about 3,000 international media representatives and professionals from the fields of music, media, games, mobile, IT design and marketing meet at sessions, networking events, meetings and award ceremonies. The Reeperbahn Festival workshops give professionals an insight into the future of digital entertainment.
