Giant Trophy Tour launched in the Europapassage: "The first highlight of EURO 2024 will take place here in Hamburg"
Nobody knows yet which soccer nations will be playing at UEFA EURO 2024 in Hamburg. This will change on December 2, when the six groups are drawn at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and it is decided which countries will play in Hamburg. Visitors to the Europapassage have been able to take a look at the "Giant Trophy", a large replica of the tournament trophy, since today. The tour of the trophy through Hamburg's ECE shopping centers kicked off with a prominent soccer talk with Marcell Jansen from HSV, among others.
Even before the draw for the European Football Championship, the "Giant Trophy", an oversized 150-kilogram, 3.5-metre-high replica of the EURO Cup, is on display in Hamburg's Europapassage, creating anticipation for the tournament, which takes place from 14 June to 14 July 2024.
In the media talk at the start, Marcell Janssen from HSV, Yul Wiegand from FC St. Pauli, Juliane Bötel from the Hamburg Sports Youth and table football world champion Linh Tran talked about the upcoming EURO and the signal that could come from the tournament in terms of "Kids & Movement".
Marcell Jansen, 45 senior internationals, World Cup participant in 2006 and 2010 and in the starting eleven in the final against Spain at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, said: "Even though we narrowly lost back then, I have very positive memories of the tournament and am delighted that we will be hosting the 2024 European Championships in Germany". The current President of HSV e.V. added: "It's great that five games will be played in Hamburg and the first highlight will be the final draw on December 2. I'm really looking forward to seeing which nations will play in the Volksparkstadion."
Yul Wiegand is responsible for soccer development at FC St. Pauli and hopes that the European Championship will also send out a signal to the younger players: "People are already talking at training about whether Cristiano Ronaldo could play with Portugal in Hamburg, for example. And I myself have very fond memories of the 2006 World Cup. It was simply a great time, with strangers watching soccer together and celebrating. I would be delighted if we could experience exactly the same atmosphere at the European Championships."
In addition to the results, it is the social interaction that makes team sports attractive for children, confirms Juliane Bötel, 1st Chairwoman of the Hamburg Sports Youth. "I played athletics as a child and teenager. My training group at the time, the friendships and the shared experiences were an important motivating factor for me to stick with it," Bötel recalls. A tournament like the UEFA EURO 2024 could definitely help to get children interested in sport in general. Because one thing is certain: the majority of children and young people do not get enough exercise.
Yesterday, the current table football world champion Linh Tran from Harburg got things moving in the Europapassage. The world champion competed against Marcell Jansen, among others.
The "Giant Trophy" will be on display in the Europapassage until November 30. Next year, it will tour other ECE shopping centers. The exact dates will be announced shortly.
