The Media Relations department communicates Hamburg and its news and stories via dedicated PR campaigns (often with international targeting), traditional media work (earned media) and its own editorial social media channels (owned media) in the areas of tourism & culture and business & innovation.

The team also offers media, journalists and influencers a comprehensive information and content service – including texts, story ideas, videos, TV footage, links, contacts and a research service on the key topics in Hamburg and the metropolitan region. In line with the motto "put Hamburg on the map", the activities and the use of a global network of contacts will make Hamburg better known and address potential investors, decision-makers, skilled workers and potential guests.

Holistic and coordinated communications

With its competent team, the Media Relations department operates a content-coordinated, holistic communication program for Hamburg and its metropolitan region on the topics of business and innovation, tourism, lifestyle and culture as well as event topics. This communication is carried out centrally in close coordination and dovetailing with the other divisions of Hamburg Marketing GmbH, Hamburg Tourismus GmbH and Hamburg Invest Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH.

  • PR and media campaigns on the city's key topics and events (e. g. UEFA EURO 2024 or the opening of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg)
  • Influencer relations for Hamburg (2024: including support for 238 content creators)
  • Editorial operation of the social media channels belonging to Hamburg Ahoi together with Hamburg Tourismus GmbH (Instagram, Facebook, audience reach in 2023: 440,000 followers and 47 million impressions)

Communication of the business and innovation location Hamburg

  • International media relations and location PR for the city's business and innovation topics (audience reach 2023: 1.8 billion potential (professional) contacts)
  • Integrated and event-related PR campaigns on internationally relevant business topics
  • Editorial operation of business-related LinkedIn channels in cooperation with the units of Hamburg Invest (audience reach 2024: 3.8 million impressions)
  • Support for local partners in their international communication, expansion and maintenance of PR networks in and outside Hamburg 

Content management

  • Content creation for media (text, images, video, footage, etc.)
  • Operation of a digital asset management system (DAM) for the HMG holding company to facilitate the technical, legal and content management of assets and to provide content both internally and externally (2024: management of 21,000 assets)
