The Media Relations department communicates Hamburg and its news and stories via dedicated PR campaigns (often with  international targeting), through traditional media work (earned media) and, in the areas of business/innovation and tourism/culture, also through its own editorial social media channels (owned media).

The team also provides media, journalists and influencers with a comprehensive range of information and content services – including texts, story ideas, videos, TV footage, links, contacts and a research service on key topics from the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Based on the core idea of "putting Hamburg on the map", our activities and our worldwide network of partners help raise Hamburg's profile and address potential investors, decision-makers, skilled workers and prospective guests.

Consistent,
harmonised communications

With its competent team, the Media Relations department is in charge of ensuring consistent, harmonised communications regarding Hamburg as a business location. Focal themes here include business & innovation, tourism, lifestyle & culture as well as event-related topics. Communication measures are implemented centrally in close coordination and liaison with other departments of Hamburg Marketing GmbH, Hamburg Tourismus GmbH and Hamburg Invest Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH.

Communicating tourism, culture & lifestyle

  • Ongoing media work and cooperation projects at regional, national and international levels (audience reach in 2023: 4.7 billion potential contacts)
  • PR/media campaigns on the city's key themes and events (e.g. UEFA EURO 2024 and the opening of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg)
  • Influencer relations for Hamburg (2024: including support to 238 content creators)
  • Editorial operation of the Hamburg Ahoi social media channels, together with Hamburg Tourismus GmbH (Instagram, Facebook, audience reach in 2023: 440,000 followers and 47 million impressions)

  • International media relations / location PR for the city's business and innovation themes (audience reach in 2023: 1.8 billion potential [professional] contacts)
  • Integrated and event-related PR campaigns relating to business topics with international appeal
  • Editorial operation of business-related LinkedIn channels in cooperation with Hamburg Invest (audience reach in 2024: 3.8 million impressions)
  • Support to local partners in the area of international communication, as well as expansion and maintenance of PR networks in Hamburg and beyond

Content management

  • Content creation for media (text, images, video, footage, et cetera)
  • Operation of a digital asset management system (DAM) for the HMG holding company to facilitate the technical, legal and content-related management of assets and to provide content both internally and externally (2024: management of 21,000 assets)
