The Green Port – Committed to Sustainability
Hamburg has set itself ambitious climate goals and made environmental protection one of its top priorities. The port industry is also playing its part by providing ecologically sustainable port operations. Many maritime and logistics companies are involved as environmental partners. These partners include the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) with its eleven subsidiaries, as well as the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg.
The heating system of the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) operates on effluent from the nearby Köhlbrandthöft sewage works. Thanks to this intelligent heat recovery programme, HHLA and the water service provider Hamburg Wasser are saving around 1,000 tonnes of harmful CO2 annually, while also cutting down on energy costs. HHLA has set itself ambitious climate goals: between 2008 and 2020, climate-damaging CO2 emissions shall be reduced by at least 30% per container handled. In the period up to 2013, HHLA had managed to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 24.9%.
