Extraordinary maritime event!

Each May the city of Hamburg celebrates the world’s greatest port festival. The 831th Hamburg Port Anniversary will take place from 8 May to 10 May 2020.

The Hamburg Port Anniversary dates back to the late 12th century to the legend of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. He issued a charter to Hamburg merchants, granting freedom from customs duties for ships sailing the Elbe from Hamburg to the North Sea. The charter was issued on the 7th May 1189 which is now known as the founding date of the Port of Hamburg. Nowadays Hamburg is the most important port in Germany, one of the world’s major container ports and a bridge between Europe an Overseas.

Each year, more than one million visitors from Germany and abroad come to Hamburg to celebrate the Anniversary with over 300 vessels from all over the globe and a huge amount of events on water and land. There are more than 200 attractions on shore including maritime, cultural and culinary highlights. The cultural programme includes exhibitions, guided tours and special events run by the museums in the Speicherstadt, the old warehouse district of Hamburg. Along the six kilometer long shore route from the Kehrwiederspitze to the Altona Fish Auction Hall a various number of stages will offer free concerts and acts for all visitors and will turn the Port Anniversary into a huge party scene.  It is a special highlight for all visitors and includes a variety of cultural and culinary insights to the culture and lifestyle of the region.

Traditional highlights such as the Grand Arrival Parade on Friday, the impressive AIDA fireworks display on Saturday evening and the Departure Parade on Sunday should not be missed.

Fun and entertainment is guaranteed for young and old on the 831th Hamburg Port Anniversary!
