The Hamburg metropolitan region is one of the most competitive regions in Germany and Europe. Almost 5.4 million people live and work here at the intersection of the most important European transport axes between Scandinavia, Western, Eastern and Southern Europe. Thanks to the best infrastructure, qualified skilled labour, innovative companies and research institutes renowned for cutting-edge research, the economy continues to grow. Supported by the high quality of life, the population has grown continuously and our region is the economic centre of northern Germany.

In addition to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Hamburg metropolitan region includes the districts of Dithmarschen, Herzogtum Lauenburg, Pinneberg, Segeberg, Steinburg, Stormarn, Ostholstein, Neumünster and Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein and the district of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony, District of Harburg, district of Lüchow-Dannenberg, district of Lüneburg, district of Rotenburg, district of Heidekreis, district of Stade and district of Uelzen and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the state capital Schwerin, district of Ludwigslust-Parchim and district of Nordwestmecklenburg.
