Hamburg is playing a pioneering role in the German energy transition – with a particular focus on renewable energies and green hydrogen. As a centre for wind energy and hydrogen innovation, the city is home to numerous companies and research institutions that are working on solutions for the energy of tomorrow. The cluster agency Renewable Energies Hamburg brings together players from industry, science and politics to promote climate-neutral technologies and infrastructures. Projects such as the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub and the close cooperation with offshore wind companies demonstrate the city's commitment to a sustainable transformation. Hamburg's strategic location and port infrastructure also support green logistics solutions and international energy transport.
Green hydrogen
Hamburg is developing into a European pioneer in the field of green hydrogen. At the centre of this is the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub project, which is being built on the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant. In collaboration with Luxcara and Siemens Energy, the construction of a 100-megawatt electrolyser is planned by 2027 to produce green hydrogen from renewable energies. Via the connected Hamburg Hydrogen Industrial Network (HH-WIN) the hydrogen will be distributed directly to industrial and logistics companies in the region. The project is part of the EU-wide and EU-funded IPCEI initiative (Important Project of Common European Interest): This is a transnational, important project of common European interest that makes an important contribution to the growth, employment and competitiveness of European industry and the economy by means of state funding. Hamburg is thus underlining its ambition to play a key role in the European hydrogen economy and actively shape industrial decarbonisation.
