Hamburg is one of the strongest research centres in Germany. As part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments five Hamburg clusters were funded in 2025 – including the central research project at the Centre for Earth System Research and Sustainability CLICCS (Climate, Climatic Change, and Society) and the interdisciplinary and international research project on the holistic study of handwritten artefacts UWA (Understanding Written Artefacts) at the University of Hamburg.
The University of Hamburg and research institutions such as DESY, the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) or the European XFEL stand for top international research. The close links with business and industry enable an effective transfer of knowledge. Hamburg is a leader in future-oriented fields such as climate research, materials science and digitalisation – also thanks to its excellent research infrastructure and interdisciplinary cooperation structures.
