Hamburg's connection to Sweden

Hamburg and Sweden have enjoyed close neighbourly relations since the early Middle Ages in important areas such as business and trade, culture and religion, science and journalism, tourism and many other areas.

Many of the largest Swedish companies, such as IKEA and H&M, have their European logistics centres in Hamburg, and the Hanseatic city is also one of the largest target markets for Swedish foreign investment. The Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Germany has member companies in the Hamburg region ranging from large corporations to SMEs and start-ups. There are also numerous links between academic institutions.
Around half of Sweden's foreign trade passes through the Port of Hamburg, and the northern route via Hamburg to the south is a major route for Swedish tourists.

Finally, the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, with its many green spaces and waterways and its cultural offerings for young and old, is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for visitors from the north.

HamburgAmbassador Dr. Ulrich Adamheit

Portrait of HamburgAmbassador Dr. Ulrich Adamheit

After completing his legal training and doctorate, Ulrich Adamheit worked for the Swedish energy company Vattenfall in Germany and Sweden for almost two decades. During this time, he worked on energy industry and strategic issues relating to Hamburg, among other things. Since 2023, he has been responsible for global risk and insurance at AB Electrolux in Sweden.

In addition to his professional connections, Ulrich Adamheit is also deeply rooted in the Hanseatic city in his private life: his Hamburg-born wife and her family in the Nordheide region have forged a close bond with the city and the metropolitan region over many years, which he continues to cultivate through regular visits. Ulrich Adamheit has lived in Stockholm with his wife and three children since 2010.

German-Swedish dialogue is a recurring theme in Ulrich Adamheit's life: He was a board member of the "German Society of Stockholm" for many years, including four years as its chairman. He headed the "Deutscher Hülfsverein von 1876" and was involved in the board of the "Swedish-German Association". He is also professionally active - including as a long-standing board member of the Swedish Risk Management Association and currently as Vice President of FERMA, the European umbrella organisation for risk managers.

As the new Hamburg Ambassador, Ulrich Adamheit will first and foremost utilise his extensive network: he has an excellent network in Sweden, not only through his involvement in various German-Swedish associations, but also in Swedish social, economic and institutional circles.

The Baltic Sea as a common cultural and economic area forms the natural framework for making Hamburg's attractiveness in Sweden even more visible. The historical trade relations, the maritime character of both regions and the close economic ties create ideal conditions for authentically communicating Hamburg's strengths - from logistics and the port industry to innovation and energy, culture and quality of life.
