Hamburg and Canada - in particular the province of Québec with its metropolis of Montréal - are closely linked by a strategic partnership that encompasses politics, business, research and culture. This transatlantic axis is based on shared strengths and many years of co-operation. Aerospace is particularly influential: Aéro Montréal and Hamburg Aviation have been cooperating since 2008, supported by the research centres ZAL (Hamburg) and CRIAQ (Québec), which are working together on pioneering technologies.
The port industry and new energies such as hydrogen and green supply chains are also creating innovative links. In addition to Quebec, the Atlantic province of Newfoundland and Labrador also plays a key role: Hamburg is an important partner in the development of a transatlantic hydrogen bridge based on the production of green hydrogen from wind energy in Newfoundland.
Renowned Hamburg-based companies such as Beiersdorf, Lufthansa Technik, Airbus and Hapag-Lloyd have branches in Montréal, emphasising the economic depth of the relationship. Cultural projects - from the Hamburg Film Festival to artist residencies - complement the exchange and strengthen mutual understanding. In this way, Hamburg, Québec and Newfoundland are positioning themselves as natural partners for global issues of the future.
