Singapore and Hamburg share a special partnership. Although the city-state has more than three times as many inhabitants as the Hanseatic city, many similarities can be recognised. Both cities are similar in size, are key maritime locations and are also central logistics, trade and economic centres in their respective regions. Important common sectors include aviation, deep tech, renewable energies, urban development and finance. This close economic networking was also recently demonstrated during the visit of Hamburg's First Mayor Dr Peter Tschentscher, who travelled to Singapore in 2024 with a delegation and met Prime Minister Wong, among others.
Singapore is the centre of what will soon be the third largest economic area in the world: ASEAN. This region is characterised by dynamic growth and a growing middle class. Around 400 Hamburg-based companies are already active in the region. In addition, many international corporations have set up their Asian headquarters in Singapore, while numerous Asian companies use the city as a base for their global business. The location benefits from reliable government support for companies, a very high degree of legal certainty and consistent protection of intellectual property.
Singapore has traditionally maintained close relations not only with the ASEAN states, but also with China, India and other East Asian countries. Close diplomatic relations have existed with the Federal Republic of Germany for more than 60 years. Singapore plays a key role in the German government's Indo-Pacific Guidelines. In addition, both countries have agreed on a work plan to further intensify bilateral cooperation in the future.
