Relations between Brazil and Hamburg are diverse and strongly characterised by trade, logistics and culture. Brazil has had a consular presence in Hamburg since 1826 and since then there has been close cooperation between the Hanseatic city and Brazil, initially in the reception of German emigrants and then increasingly in trade. The port of Hamburg plays a central role in the exchange of goods: Brazil exports mainly agricultural products such as coffee and soya as well as raw materials such as copper ore to Hamburg. Conversely, Hamburg supplies aircraft, fertilisers and machinery. Logistics companies in Hamburg are important partners for transport between Europe and South America.
Culturally, the connection is evident in exhibitions, music events and educational projects. An active Brazilian community in Hamburg promotes exchange. Almost 500 Hamburg companies have branches in Brazil. Investments in the energy transition and in the development of infrastructure, particularly in the port area, are promising for these companies.
