Germany and Vietnam have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 50 years, with Hamburg standing out in particular for its close economic, cultural and scientific contacts. A Memorandum of Understanding in the maritime industry and direct shipping traffic between Hamburg and Vietnam emphasise the port's central role in trade with Southeast Asia. Vietnam's dynamic economy also makes the country an attractive partner in the region.
The successful economic relations are reflected in numerous Hamburg companies that are active and present in Vietnam. At the same time, many Vietnamese companies use Hamburg as a gateway to Europe. Germany is now Vietnam's most important trading partner in the EU, while Vietnam is Germany's most important partner within the ASEAN states.
Relations are also diverse outside of trade - particularly in the field of education. University partnerships, such as the German-Vietnamese University, promote exchange and cooperation. Numerous Vietnamese who have studied, worked or completed a training programme in Germany strengthen bilateral ties. The growing Vietnamese community in Hamburg, predominantly characterised by women, is a visible expression of this close partnership.
