Auckland and Hamburg are characterised by their identity as cities on the water. They are not only port cities and the global trade and logistics centres of their respective countries, but the water also characterises working, living and leisure. The two cities are united by urbanity without the hustle and bustle, creativity, cosmopolitanism and economic strength.
In terms of foreign trade, New Zealand ranks 56th for Hamburg. The main imports are meat and meat products as well as tropical fruit. Exports are dominated by aircraft and fertilisers are also exported to New Zealand. In 2024, 187 New Zealanders were living in Hamburg.
