South Korea

Hamburg's connection to South Korea

Hamburg has maintained close political, economic and cultural relations with South Korea for decades, which are particularly characterised by the partnership with the port city of Busan. During this time, the country has developed into one of the most important economic nations in the world. Today, South Korea is strong in the fields of AI, semiconductor technology, telecommunications, biotechnology and quantum research. The country is also one of the leading nations in the soft power sector, which is mainly due to the global appeal of the "Hallyu wave", i.e. cultural exports such as K-pop, K-dramas, film, fashion and beauty products.

Hamburg's economy is particularly linked to South Korea through foreign trade, the maritime industry and future technologies. in 2024, First Mayor Dr Peter Tschentscher visited Seoul and Busan to strengthen cooperation in the fields of hydrogen, green shipping and digitalisation. More than 300 companies from Hamburg maintain business relations with South Korea, with around 70 of them having a branch in the country. These include renowned companies such as Hapag-Lloyd, Kühne + Nagel and Beiersdorf, which build important bridges between the two regions in the fields of logistics, shipping and consumer goods.

HamburgAmbassador Anton Scholz

Portrait of HamburgAmbassador Anton Scholz

Anton Scholz was born in Hamburg and has lived in Korea since 1994 with brief interruptions. He originally came to Korea via the path of martial arts and Zen, but now he has been bringing German and Korean companies together for over 25 years with his company "Korea-Consult" and supporting them in a variety of ways.

His core expertise lies in the field of communication, and whether it is consulting, project management, event or media support, he has become an indispensable point of contact for many small and large German companies and institutions.

Especially in a country like Korea, it is very important to have someone with a good network and understanding of the local working culture at your side in order to be able to operate successfully.

Anton Scholz has been a HamburgAmbassador since 2018, and in addition to his activities for his beloved hometown, he also advises the Korean government and sits on the board of BMW Korea.

Over the past 25 years, Anton Scholz has supported German companies in almost all economic sectors, but the main areas of activity of his company can be divided into four areas:

1. consultancy and project management

2. event and trade fair support

3. intercultural management workshops and lectures

4. film production

Korea is a very attractive market, but not an easy one. Local expertise and intercultural competence are important in order to be successful here in the long term. This is why even Germany's largest companies seek support and advice for their activities in Korea.

Support and training for German expats and delegations as well as direct and practical support in the realisation of projects in and with Korea - this is where Anton Scholz sees his role.
