Hamburg and New York are closely linked economically and logistically. As important port cities, there are still regular container connections that efficiently organise the movement of goods between the two metropolitan regions. Both cities also have excellent links with their respective hinterlands: Hamburg with northern Germany and central Europe, New York with the north-east of the USA, which further facilitates the exchange of goods and services.
Numerous Hamburg companies are active in New York and the surrounding area, including Wempe with a large shop on Fifth Avenue and Nivea in Connecticut. The cities share strong economic interests in the areas of trade, financial services, innovation and technology, creating many opportunities for co-operation between companies, research institutions and start-ups.
