Hamburg and Ghana have been linked for a long time - economically, historically and through migration. From the 18th century, Hamburg merchants were involved in the trade in gold, and later also palm oil and cocoa, via the former "Gold Coast".
The port of Hamburg maintains close economic relations with the harbours in Ghana - Tema and Takoradi. Cocoa, cashew nuts, manganese, bauxite and shea butter regularly come to Hamburg from Ghana. Hamburg also serves as a hub for the export of German machinery, vehicles and industrial equipment to Ghana.
Ghana is the second largest cocoa producer in the world. A significant proportion of the cocoa for the German chocolate industry comes via the Port of Hamburg. Hamburg is home to cocoa traders and roasting plants that specialise in Ghanaian cocoa.
The largest Ghanaian community in the EU lives in Germany and predominantly in Hamburg. Hamburg has a lively Ghanaian community with associations, churches and cultural events.
