"One Year To Go" in Hamburg: the 2024 European Football Championship kicks off in one year's time

In exactly one year's time, the first UEFA EURO 2024 match will take place in Hamburg on June 16, 2024. "One Year To Go" was therefore the motto of a campaign on the occasion of the "Active City Day" this Friday. With prominent participation, the people of Hamburg were able to take 365 shots on goal on a campaign area at the Mönckebergbrunnen and thus start the countdown to the EURO. Four preliminary round matches and one quarter-final match will be played in Hamburg in a year's time. The group draw (final draw) for the matches in the ten host cities will take place on December 2, 2023 at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

One year until kick-off: Today, Hamburg is celebrating "One Year To Go" as the host city of UEFA EURO 2024 (14 June to 14 July 2024) with a colorful supporting program to countdown to the first UEFA Euro 2024 match in Hamburg.

The participatory campaign was officially opened at Mönckebergbrunnen with a goal shoot-out by Hamburg's State Councillor for Sport Christoph Holstein and Hamburg's Host City Ambassador Patrick Esume. They received prominent support from national goalkeeper, Olympic and European champion and Champions League winner Almuth Schult and HSV veteran, German champion and European Cup winner, HSV club manager Bernd Wehmeyer.

Hamburg State Councillor for Sport Christoph Holstein is already looking forward to UEFA EURO 2024: "Next year, soccer will ensure that the whole of Europe looks to Hamburg. We are ready. And we are proud to be one of the cities that have qualified as host cities."

Hamburg's Host City Ambassador Patrick Esume added: "My home city of Hamburg is a sport-loving and hospitable city. Cosmopolitanism, internationality, commitment to diversity and a passion for sport are very important here. The enthusiasm for and anticipation of this event is growing every day and can be felt everywhere. The countdown is on."

Almuth Schult emphasizes the unique atmosphere at international tournaments: "Major tournaments such as the European and World Championships are always something special. Not only for me as a player, but people from different countries and cultures come together around the games. This creates a unique atmosphere full of anticipation and emotion in the stadiums and beyond."

And Bernd Wehmeyer on the sporting venue: "Hamburg's Volksparkstadion is a very special soccer venue. Major international matches and successes in the European Cup have already been celebrated here. As a former player at Volkspark, I know how this great atmosphere in the stadium spurs the players on to special performances. Other teams will soon be able to share this experience during EURO 2024. We look forward to welcoming the many international guests to the newly renovated Volksparkstadion next summer."

Other participants in the EURO 2024 Talk moderated by Sebastian Conrad with lots of information about the tournament and the exciting goal-scoring as part of the "365 shots until EURO 2024" campaign were Serdal Celebi - FC St. Pauli blind footballer, Anne Schröder - national field hockey player, Christian Okun - President of the Hamburg Football Association, Mara Burmeister - volunteer, the soccer children Momme, Isabella and Ella and, of course, the many Hamburg residents who enthusiastically took part in the campaign.

With this goal shootout in the middle of Hamburg's city center, citizens had the opportunity to score their own personal goal for the European Championship in their own country until Friday evening. A countdown will be counted down so that, true to the tournament motto "United by football. United in the heart of Europe." everyone can shorten the waiting time and make their contribution to their "host city" Hamburg.

In addition, every shooter can also take part in a prize draw for the coveted tickets for a match in Hamburg next year. If you weren't there, you can catch up on Instagram at @euro2024.

"Final Draw" for UEFA EURO 2024 in the Elbphilharmonie

Which teams will meet in the four group matches in Hamburg will be decided in December. The grandly staged draw for the UEFA EURO 2024 groups will then take place at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. The "final draw" is scheduled for December 2, 2023 and will determine the six groups of four in which the 24 best teams in Europe will compete against each other in the summer of 2024. Only then will the ten host cities of the tournament know which nations will play at their venue.

Hamburg Marketing GmbH is using the final draw, the subsequent phase before the EURO and the tournament itself as an opportunity to generate international attention for the city and promote Hamburg.

Active City Day in Hamburg

The "One Year to Go" campaign is part of today's "Active City Day", which is once again setting an example for more movement in everyday life in Hamburg. Companies, senior citizens' and inclusion facilities, clubs, schools and many more are taking part in the campaign day with a wide range of exercise options. Everyone can simply move more themselves, motivate their living environment to participate and many activities throughout Hamburg offer inspiration for this. The "Active City Day" mile takes place centrally on Jungfernstieg - an exercise mile with the most beautiful panoramic view over the Binnenalster. With small and large exercise options, it is ideal for an active break from work or shopping. More about the event: www.hamburg.de/active-city.
